There are certain things a good hotel needs, great staff, elegant rooms, somewhere to escape from the city din and a place to rest your weary feet when you have walked the length and breadth of Florence and climbed too many towers in the heat of the day. However all these thing are only as good as the location of the hotel in relation to the main sites you have come to visit. The Hotel Orto De Medici excels at all the requirements, the rooms are modern, stylish and exceptionally clean, the sound proofing of the rooms means the city can whizz by outside with disturbing you and the corridors display art works in case you need more paintings to look at. Breakfast is served in the small 1st floor breakfast room and should be eaten on the terrace, whilst ensuring the birds don't steal your bread role. Best of all in the afternoon after a hot and hard walking day a small bar opens on the terrace, Prosecco, cheese and honey are a must whilst watching the Swifts dart around the nearby church.
Tips for visiting, get the taxi from the airport; there is a fixed rate of 20 Euros for the trip (2013) plus one Euro per suitcase. Return to the airport walk to corner of the block turn left into Via degli Arazzieri 50 metres taxi rank in front of you 20 Euro rate applies.
Staff are superb, small business so staff do many roles, very well and take a pride in their hotel.
Finally Location, Location, Location, all major sites are easily accessible by walking, some great restaurants on the Via San Gallo, taxi rank on the doorstep makes arrival and departure easy.
If you want a modern hotel, in a quieter part of town with easy access and great staff then this hotel will be my first choice in Florence.
Reviewers consistently give this hotel a five star rating, it is well justified and is truly a gem of a hotel.
